This is the novelisation of the 20th Detective Conan movie The Darkest Nightmare by Mizuki Shima. The plot takes place in the Tōto Aquarium, which is built like a theme park. While on a trip there with Professor Agasa, Conan and the Detective Boys discover a confused woman who has lost her memory. However, she is actually a member of the Black Organisation, the spy Curaçao.
Reading 名探偵コナン is super nostaligic for me, aaaah. It was my first manga I ever bought and although I’m absolutely not up to date with the series, the fandom still manages to draw me in every now and then.
I hadn’t seen the movie yet, when I read this book and without the comparision I actually really enjoyed the book (- although I now must say that the movie works better with all those action scenes). Still, I found the plot very interesting! It features the black organisation, NOC agents and many popular characters, which are all sensibly involved in the overarching plot. I’d say it’s definitely one of the better movies of the franchise.
This novelisation was published by Shōgakukan Junior Bunko, so it has furigana on all kanji. (More books like that here!) But while the dialog was fairly easy to read, I really struggled with the action scenes at the beginning of the book and at the end. I realized that I don’t possess the necessary vocabulary for car chases and had to skip some sentences unfortunately. I really learnt some interesting words while reading this!
